Josephine Atwell

Josephine is a kind and collaborative Psychologist/Clinical Psychology Registrar. Josephine provides a non-judgemental space for young people and their families. Josephine appreciates the importance of an inclusive, neuro-affirming, and open-minded approach where all individuals are valued and heard.

Josephine has experience working with children, young people, and parents in public health and university settings. She has a particular interest in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in young people. She completed her clinical placement at OCD BOUNCE at Sydney Children’s Hospital, delivering evidence-based treatment to young people with OCD. She has also completed placements at the University of Sydney, Child Behaviour Research Clinic, and Naamuru Parent/Baby Inpatient Unit. Josephine is passionate about equipping clients with the skills to manage OCD, anxiety, depression, self-harm, gender identity and sexuality concerns, eating disorders, perinatal adjustment, and challenging behaviours. 

She endeavours to help individuals take steps towards their personal goals and develop the tools to cope with what is troubling them. Josephine mainly draws on a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) framework, taking influence from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Maudsley-Based Family Therapy (FBT), and Parent Management Training.

 Josephine has completed a Master of Clinical Psychology from the University of Sydney. During her studies, she received several awards for academic performance and collaboration, just recently winning a prize with the APS College of Clinical Psychologists. She is a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and Australian Clinical Psychology Association (ACPA). Josephine also works in eating disorder research, striving towards improved models of care for people suffering with these conditions.
